It's Time for some Holy Humor!

Holy Humor Sunday will be held on April 28, and this year our theme is "Mardi Gras."  We'll even be having a Mardi Gras parade!  Dress for the day is as outlandish as you care to make it, with purple, green and gold at the top of the list.  Please join us as we celebrate the wonderful gift of Easter and God's last laugh on the Devil.  Want to know more about Holy Humor?  Just click on the link...

Why do we celebrate Holy Humor Sunday?  Well, for starters, it’s darned good fun.  But the idea of a Sunday dedicated to holy humor is really nothing new.  The early Greek churches (we’re talking really early – back in medieval times) customarily celebrated the week after Easter with “days of joy and laughter,” not to mention picnics and parties.  These celebrations culminated on the first Sunday after Easter, a day known in the modern day church as “low Sunday” (due to low attendance, especially in contrast to the traditionally high attendance on Easter Sunday).

Originally called Bright Sunday, the day was meant to keep the excitement of the Resurrection alive, with churchgoers and pastors playing practical jokes on one another, singing and dancing.  Early church theologians, including Augustine and Gregory of Nyssa, taught that God played a practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead.  They called it "Risus paschalis" - the Easter laugh.  But, alas, as belief in the Resurrection began to fade, so did the observance.

It took a jokester to bring it back.  In 1988, Cal Samra, founder of the Fellowship of Merry Christians, started encouraging churches to include the day in their Easter season calendars.  Niantic Baptist Church celebrated its first Holy Humor Sunday in 2002 with a balloon-filled sanctuary and “reverse offering” in which cartoon-filled Easter eggs were given out.  And we’ve been laughing ever since!
